Ride culture

Riding in the UK

The UK has one of the strongest club cultures in cycling. Sunday club runs, midweek chaingangs, the café stop with its beans on toast and the obligatory slice of cake. It's a scene where kit gets noticed, and where a bold design says as much about you as your average speed.

British riding is also short, sharp and steep. You won't find thirty kilometre Alpine passes, but you will find gradients that make Alpine passes feel gentle.

Roads worth the trip

Box Hill, Surrey. The zigzag road made famous by the 2012 Olympic road race. Short, sweeping and always busy with riders on a weekend morning, with a café at the top that has seen more Lycra than most.

Hardknott Pass, Lake District. Often called the steepest road in England, with ramps close to 30%. It's the sting in the tail of the Fred Whitton Challenge, one of the toughest sportives in Britain.

Bealach na Bà, Scottish Highlands. A single-track climb from sea level to over 600 metres on the road to Applecross, with hairpins that look borrowed from the Alps.

Cheddar Gorge, Somerset. A steady climb through towering limestone cliffs. A classic for riders in the South West and a regular feature on local club routes.

What to wear, season by season

British weather can change four times on one ride. For most of the year, a long sleeve kit with bib tights is the sensible base, with a windbreaker in the back pocket for exposed moorland and coastal roads. When summer finally arrives, switch to a short sleeve kit and make the most of the long evenings.

Every Nordvelo design comes in men's and women's fits. Shop men's kit or women's kit.
