Riding in Belgium

Belgium has more cycling heritage per square kilometre than anywhere on earth. This is the home of Eddy Merckx, the Tour of Flanders and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Every spring, the whole country turns out to watch the classics, and every weekend, the roads fill with clubs riding the same cobbles as the pros.

Flanders brings short, brutal cobbled climbs. Wallonia and the Ardennes bring longer, steeper hills. Both reward riders who show up in good kit.

Roads worth the trip

Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg. The decisive cobbled climbs of the Tour of Flanders. The Kwaremont is long and rough, the Paterberg short and savagely steep. Ride them back to back like the pros.

Koppenberg. A narrow cobbled wall with ramps over 20%. Stay seated, keep the power on and hope nobody stops in front of you.

Muur van Geraardsbergen. The famous 'Wall' topped by a chapel. A legendary climb in Flemish cycling history.

La Redoute, Ardennes. A steep Ardennes climb from Liège-Bastogne-Liège, often painted with riders' names and with fans lining the road in spring.

What to wear, season by season

Belgian weather is famous for a reason. For much of the year, a long sleeve kit with bib tights and a windbreaker is standard. Come summer, switch to a short sleeve kit for kermesse season and long evenings on the bergs.
