Riding in Portugal

The Volta a Portugal has been raced every summer for decades and draws huge crowds to its mountain finishes. The Algarve has become a favourite for winter training, with pro teams arriving each February for the Volta ao Algarve. In the north, the Douro valley and the Serra da Estrela offer serious climbing.

Plenty of sun and plenty of climbing. Bright kit fits right in.

Roads worth the trip

Serra da Estrela. The road to Torre, the highest point in mainland Portugal at nearly 2,000 metres, a long climb through granite landscapes.

Senhora da Graça. A famous summit finish of the Volta a Portugal near Mondim de Basto, steep and lined with fans in August.

Algarve hills. Quiet climbs like the Alto do Malhão and the roads around Monchique, a winter favourite for riders from all over Europe.

What to wear, season by season

The south is rideable year round in a short sleeve kit, with a long sleeve jersey for winter mornings. In the north and the mountains, a long sleeve kit and windbreaker are wise from autumn to spring.
