Dutch cycling culture is everywhere, from commuters on omafietsen to fast groups rolling out on Sunday mornings. Road riders here build strength in the wind, riding in tight echelons along dykes and polders. When they want hills, they head south to Limburg, home of the Amstel Gold Race.

With so many riders on the road, a kit that stands out is worth having.

Roads worth the trip

Cauberg, Valkenburg. The most famous climb in the Netherlands and a key climb of the Amstel Gold Race. Short but punchy, with a lively town at the bottom.

Limburg hills. Beyond the Cauberg there's the Keutenberg, the Eyserbosweg and plenty more. Link them up for a hilly loop that feels nothing like the rest of the country.

Afsluitdijk. A long, straight, wind-exposed ride across the barrier dam between North Holland and Friesland. A true test of Dutch wind riding.

Zeeland coast. Dune roads, dykes and storm barriers along the North Sea. Beautiful and often brutally windy.

What to wear, season by season

Wind is the constant, so a windbreaker is never a bad idea. From autumn to spring, a long sleeve kit and bib tights handle the cold. In summer, a short sleeve kit is all you need for long evenings on the dykes.
