Ride culture

Riding in Germany

Germany is one of Europe's biggest cycling markets and one of its most varied. There's the gravel and forest roads of the central uplands, flat riverside routes along the Rhine and Mosel, and proper mountains in the south. Racing has deep roots too, with Eschborn-Frankfurt on the first of May and the Deutschland Tour bringing the pros to German roads every year.

German riders tend to be precise about kit. Fit, fabric and function come first. We just think it should look good too.

Roads worth the trip

Black Forest climbs. The Schwarzwald is packed with long, steady climbs through pine forest, including the roads up to the Feldberg, the highest point in the region. Quiet roads, good surfaces and plenty of cake stops.

Kesselberg, Bavaria. A twisting climb between Kochel and Walchensee, popular with Munich riders for its hairpins and lake views. Get there early before the motorbikes do.

Mosel Valley. Riverside roads between vineyards, with steep side climbs up through the vines whenever you want to test your legs.

Harz Mountains. Northern Germany's go-to hills, with forest climbs and long descents that make a good weekend escape from the flatlands.

What to wear, season by season

German winters are cold and grey, so a long sleeve kit with bib tights carries most riders from October to April. Spring and autumn call for a windbreaker on the descents. From June, it's short sleeve kits and long days in the mountains.

Every Nordvelo design comes in men's and women's fits. Shop men's kit or women's kit.
