Ride culture

Riding in New Zealand

Kiwi riders are a hardy bunch. The Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge has drawn thousands of riders around the lake every November for decades. Rail trails and gravel routes have opened up the backcountry, and road riders head for the Southern Alps whenever they can.

With so much riding in so little space, Kiwi roads deserve kit that stands out as much as the scenery.

Roads worth the trip

Crown Range Road. Between Queenstown and Wānaka, one of the highest sealed main roads in the country, with huge views over the Wakatipu basin.

Lake Taupō loop. Around 160 kilometres around the lake, the route of the Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge.

Akaroa and the Banks Peninsula. Steep climbs over old volcanic craters near Christchurch, with stunning harbour views.

Arthur's Pass. A spectacular crossing of the Southern Alps between Canterbury and the West Coast.

What to wear, season by season

New Zealand weather can change quickly, especially in the mountains. A short sleeve kit covers summer, with a windbreaker always in the pocket. Through winter, a long sleeve kit and bib tights keep you riding.

Every Nordvelo design comes in men's and women's fits. Shop men's kit or women's kit.
